As winter is fast approaching (meaning our inevitable hibernation) it has never been a better time to invest in staple clothing items that will see you through the year with little to no fuss. Styling wise, it’s all about transeasonal layering this year; think staple outerwear jackets, overshirts and tailored pants.
But if there is room to be made for any product in your wardrobe, it is our trusty friend, denim.
Here are some ways that you can utilise denim in real and effective ways; for there is a Steve McQueen that lives in all of us.
Categorised between a regular-sized shirt and a light jacket, the overshirt is extremely versatile for transeasonal styling. A denim overshirt, however; well, that’s another story. Once reserved for industrial workers on job sites, the denim overshirt has today transformed into a staple item for jeanswear enthusiasts and trend-followers alike.
For your convenience, opt for an unbuttoned look with a base white tee underneath, chinos and sneakers. When it gets a little chilly, just button up half way and you’re all set to go. Do as the style icons throughout the ages have done and adopt denim into your everyday styling repertoire.
Our pick: The Dumont Midnight Shirt is woven by Italian masters of indigo-dyed shirting, Albiate. Rich in colour, the Dumont features stretch denim and is a hybrid style that takes minimalist cues with a sartorial edge. It’s a piece that will only improve in character with time and wear.
Double-denim made its resurgence a couple of years back but to little avail. However, it’s now 2018; the year to shine a light on dark denim once again. And if done correctly, double denim styling can be extremely effective and down-right cool. Think of all the stars that have pulled it off over the years; James Dean, Elvis Presley, Marvin Gaye… the list goes on!
It’s important to remember that when double denim-ing, make sure that the shades of denim are somewhat different. You can’t go wrong with a lighter hue on top, and dark on bottom. Finish with a pair of crisp white sneakers for a point of difference.
REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE
There are no rules to follow when it comes to styling your denim this season. The denim shirt is a perfect example of this. Here are two ways you can style your denim this coming season:
Tired of the same white shirt/navy suit combination? Spice things up at your next cocktail event with denim as your focal point. The Dumont shirt would look fantastic under a navy suit. Accessorise with a chambray blue tie and a chambray floral pocket square.
Whether you’re hitting the town with mates or off to a special dinner date, ditch the tie for a casual look this weekend with a denim shirt paired over tailored chinos and finished with leather Chelsea boots.
BLUE JEAN BABY
Every man needs a quality, tailored pair of jeans that will last him longer than 6-months; invest in good denim jeans and they will last you for years to come.
Aquila’s Sutton Jean is a great example of what we’re preaching. Crafted in Turkey from world innovators of the denim world, Orta, the Sutton features a rich, indigo-dyed denim with a hint of stretch. Featuring the perfect weight level to wear all-year round, the minimal, tapered fit is suitable for weekday to weekend. Wear without washing for at least 6-8 months for a truly unique appearance.
